Summer in the City

Hi, Cheryl here again, from Cheryl’s Window, and here is what is in my studio today.  

It is summer, and being from Florida, most expect beach themes from me. Unfortunately, I am not a beach girl.  CHA is coming up and last summer was my first CHA experience.  The day before CHA started, I had the chance to go into Chicago and experience THE CITY!  And it was so very hot, but it was exhilarating for me- the sights, the sounds, the smells, the people!

I had so much fun listening to this song and building my own mini album using Spellbinder dies designed by Donna Salazar.  I used Creative Book Pages One and Two as well as a few butterflies from her Wonderful Wings Grand Nestabilities collection. 

I created this mixed media album using chipboard for the back page to give my book stability as well as a variety of papers, tags, time card, plastic baggy, envelopes, and a piece of raw canvas.

Before I show you the entire album, I thought I’d share some of the creation process.

I used Zutter Chipboard cover for the back page of my album.  This provided structure and stability for my mixed album.  However, 8x8 was larger than I wanted, so I used my Zutter Kutter to cut down the board to 7 x 7 and then I rounded two outer corners with the Zutter Corner Rounder.

I inked edges and embossed a few embellishments using various products from ClearSnap.  I also colored and shaded with some with Faber-Castell Gelatos, even while using the die as a stencil.

I had so much fun putting this album together.   It is bright and happy and very summery to me.

Franny's Handmade Mini Books

During the last week of school, Franny gets to host a little craft table for something they call "Scholar Dollar Day."  This is where the students get to spend the "bucks" they've earned all year (for good behavior and homework) on stuff their fellow students sell.  Some kids sell cookies or snacks or other yummies.  Last fall, Franny sold a bunch of little Bind-it-All books we had in the scrap room - random samples and such, and she made a killing.  This time, she wanted to create a bunch of her own - and this is how we did it!

For projects like this, scrap cardboard -in this case, shipping boxes - works great.

We started by using scrap cardboard (shipping boxes) that we trimmed on the Zutter Kutter.  You can made a bunch of 3X4" pieces from one package - it's amazing how many!  Then we trimmed white paper for the inside pages of each book - one sheet of 12X12 makes 12 3X4" pages.  We also trimmed scraps of patterned paper for the covers.  The Dreamkuts is indeed the dream machine for this task!

3X4 is the perfect quick size for kid projects.

In addition to the cardboard, we used random pieces of acrylic and plastic that we found in the scrap room.  It really is something to go digging around for materials and finding things that can be quickly turned into covers.  Franny got a little assembly line going - gluing the papers to the covers, me helping her punch; she is a real binding pro - has to be to be the daughter of a Zutter Zister!  Once we got all the little books bound, she lined them up and set to adding her favorite embellishments.  Usually, flowers were the top pick, but I also had so many leftover sticker sheets, that she made good use of all sorts of stickers and such.  I love projects like this that uses up the leftover materials!!

Punch, place pages and covers in order, thread the owire, and bind.  Voila!

She ended up making out quite well at this year's sale again.  Her friend sold flower decorated pens, so between the two of them, they had a nice marketing plan - notebooks and pens!  She's excited about all the "Scholar Dollars" she earned.  Too bad she can't spend those dollars anywhere but at school!  LOL!

Washi Tape Holder with Clipboard Wood

Hello Zutter fans.  Cheryl here again to share my new little happy place on my desk.  This  just makes me smile to look at it.   I’ve seen some really fancy washi tape holders and didn’t want to pay the fancy price tag for a few I’ve seen; so, I went through my stash to see what I had to make one myself.   I just happened to have some Zutter Clipboard Wood in my supplies and I have The Zutter Kutter in my tool arsenal that I knew would cut the Zutter Clipboard Wood.  I’m finding more and more uses for this tool and loved that I didn’t have to find the electric power tools to cut this. 

I started with 3x4 and 6x6 Zutter Clipboard Wood.  I cut the 3x4 wood into two pieces 2x4.

I cut 1” off the 6x6 Zutter Clipboard Wood and then scored at 3” by only cutting to the 3rd dial on The Zutter Kutter.

After my pieces were cut, I used Helmar 450 Quick Dry Adhesive to glue the sides together.  I loved that the Helmar 450 Quick Dry Adhesive dried quick enough that I only had to old it for a minute or two and I didn’t have to clamp anything. 

I used an adhesive eraser to remove any glue seepage from my wood joints.

I love working with the Zutter Clipboard Wood because it is strong and yet so easy to sand and work with.  I sanded down the edges and joints. 

I’ve had some very special Washi Tape that was gifted to me by sister designer Jasmine Low.  I’ve used a little of it, but have been hoarding it.  I don’t think that is what Jasmine really meant for me to do with it, so I have decided to really use it and enjoy using it.  After wiping all the sanding dust off by box, I covered it with random strips of Washi tape.   I did add a few small pieces from a retro collection I found at Paper Source too for a little contrast. 

To further protect my tape holder, I coated the taped box with Helmar Decoupage and then sealed it with Helmar Krystal Kote Gloss.   Anyone that has seen my desk in the middle of a project knows that I mist, ink, paint, and basically make a mess of anything in, on, and around my desk when I’m working.  I am a messy artist (and I am embracing that)!  Now I know my little happy tape holder will be protected and can easily be wiped off.

Here is a picture of the backside.  I love that these tapes all fit perfectly in my Zutter Clipboard Wood box.

So, I hope you will take away some life lessons from my project.  #1.   Use what you have.  Go through your stash and see what you may already have before buying something new.   #2.  Look at products in your stash in a new light.   How can I take that product and alter, cut, or modify it to be something new.   Instead of trying to find the right size wood at a lumbar store or my husband’s tool shed, I was able to find a perfectly good product right in my studio.  I was able to create something I wanted for my desk out of two Zutter Clipboard Wood covers.   While these make great album covers, they make a great wood base too.   Please share with us if you find a unique way to use the Zutter Clipboard Wood.

MemorieZ down Zutter Lane

Hello Zutter fans.  Cheryl Boglioli here with my first post as an official Zutter Zister.  I have been a fan of Zutter for many years and am so excited that they have brought back Zutter inZpiration with a new DeZign Team.  I’m even more excited that I am one of those chosen to be a part of this.  This next year to going to be amaZing; I know that by the amount of talent that compriZes this team and am humbled and honored to be just a small part of it.  

I’ve been crafting and scrapbooking for many years.  However, I finally took the plunge and became a full-time designer and educator within the last year.   It was through encouragement and support from family, friends, and fellow designers that gave me the courage to take this major step. 

My family has been a huge support in this endeavor and I am truly thankful for them everyday.  I have a supportive husband who also competes in North American Strongman Association competitions, so you’ll see pictures of these events occasionally.   I also have a gorgeous (if I say so myself) daughter who plans to go to school next year for Professional Makeup Artistry and special effects.   She will be graduating from Indian River State College this weekend with her AA degree and then will be turning 19 in 3 weeks, so to say I’m super proud of her is an understatement. 

I truly love my Zutter tools and the freedom they give me to create so many wonderful home and office projects, mini albums, and gifts.  I thought I’d share with you some highlights from my Zutter projects over the years.

I use my Zutter Kutter when prepping for class workshops or when working with heavier materials.  I am so thankful to have this power tool in my arsenal. 

Here are a few ladies that are learning to use the Distrezz-It-All in one of the workshops I recently taught.  They definitely had a great time and loved this.

Winter CHA 2010! Meet the New Zutter Products!
