Celebrating the Last of Summer With a Corrugated Board Technique

Hello! It's Amy here today, and I am so happy to share a favorite technique of mine in a video tutorial, and to give you a look at a layout I created using this technique!

As summer reaches its end for us here in Kansas, I wanted to review the celebration of fun we had at the beginning of the summer, visiting family in Minnesota. While we were there, we enjoyed several trips to their clear, beautiful lakes. My daughters all love the water so much, mostly because I am a water lover myself, and had them in the water right away, when they were tiny babies. My oldest daughter is now in her senior year (where did the time go?) and I'm getting nostalgic about everything. Of course, when seeing the picture below of her so happy in the lake, I remembered back to how she would amaze everyone at the swimming pool, by diving in the water, and swimming like a little dolphin, as early as 2 1/2 or 3 years old. No matter if she's an adult or not, she'll always be my "water baby." So, I created this layout around this theme.

 I got the fabulous idea to create "water" with mist and layers, from a beautiful layout created by Jennifer Priest. You can see it HERE (it's a must see).  I changed it up a bit, by using cheesecloth, and spraying it with many colors and layers of mist, and then shaping it using decoupage paste and Krystal Kote (in Matte) by Helmar.

It's Amy here today with my first post as a Zutter Zister! I feel incredibly blessed to be a part of this amazing team, where the original Zutter Zisters set the bar for fantastic and innovative album design. I have deeply admired what Zutter has to offer for so long, and been so inspired by the ways the design team has showcased such fun and exciting products! So, needless to say, I'm thrilled to be showing you a few of my projects featuring these products, and to let you know a little about me.

I thought I'd kick things off with one of my favorite album covers, for a travel journal; because besides being a mom to 3 lovely, creative girls, and the wife to my best friend from college, I'm a courageous soul, who loves to explore the world, even if it is just where I am at that very moment. I try not to be limited by fear, and to try to use each of the talents I may have to the fullest. One day, I hope to travel the world, and see the sights in such places as India, Peru, Thailand, South America......the whole globe! Of course, the best part will be scrapping all of those memories!

Since I started scrapbooking and crafting a few years ago, one of the main things that really keeps my creative motor running, is thinking of fun ways to showcase my memories. I love how the bind-it-all makes it easy to take a fun, different idea, and make it a reality! Like this "haunted house" album I made showcasing the photos from our annual family "Halloweenie Roast" at my mom and dad's farm. It was fun to figure out how to make the album open up like the doors of a haunted house, by binding them on each side, to one large piece of Zutter corrugated board in the back. The album doors open wide to a panorama of photos of the event! (The handle to the door, is a old cabinet pull I found in the drawer in my garage!)


Oh, and as a quick aside, if you see the books that are fitting for this album (spooky Agatha Christie mysteries) on the side of the album, and maybe the shelves of books behind, you'll see this was photographed at my place of work....a library! I am the director of a small public library (with perfect evening light for photographing projects after work), as my main source of employment, as well as being a church soloist and section leader. I am a trained operatic soprano....who obviously took a bit of a detour. Hehe.

 You'll see that these last two projects are created using Zutter's 13x13 corrugated board.  I have a slight obsession with this corrugated board, for any project! I love the texture and dimension it provides, and how it absorbs paint and mist. I use Zutter's corrugated board so much, that I have developed a special painting technique for the cardboard, that I will be so excited to share with you all very soon!

You will also find that I enjoy finding and using recycled and thrifted elements, especially in my mini books. I love to take things that have pretty or usual graphics (like the coffee bags that I turned into book pages HERE on the bind-it-all blog),and use them on my pages. It always makes me feel so bad to throw them away! (No, please don't sign me up for the next episode of Hoarders, my husband keeps me in check!)

The Girls Layout - with the Distrezz-it-All & Corrugated Board!

While I was at the Scrapping Frenzy convention in Alabama I had a chance to make this layout.  The photos are of me with my mom and sisters from my last trip out to Arizona.

As you can see in the photo below there was a whole lotta Distrezzin' goin on! I used my Distrezz-it-All from Zutter on the background paper ("Textures" Memory Mosaics), on the Artistic Paper, on the photo mats ("Nana's Notebook" from Trunk in the Attic), on the extra corrugated  board die cut with my Creative Pages set (the first one) and then right on the photos themselves! I Smooch Spritzed the Artistic Paper with "Caramel Latte" and the new "Cashmere" color. I also inked the edges of almost EVERYTHING with my new Mix'd Media Inx from Clearsnap.

Below is a double butterfly made with my Wonderful Wings Spellbinder dies. I die cut the lacey part out of my Artistic Paper and the background part from shipping labels. I used the sticky side of the sticker to adhere Fairydust Glitter in Pralines & Cream. The fancy tag was die cut from my 8x8 paper pad that has "Compatible" images that you can die cut from the Spellbinder dies and then to make it even more fabulous, I added the bling from Want2Scrap that matched the fancy tags as well!

In the photo below, I die cut the lacey strip from my Creative Pages Two set out of my Corrugated board from Zutter, embossed it and inked it with my "Truffle" Mix'd Media Inx, then wrinkled it and made a ruffle out of it. Before I distrezzed the Artistic Paper I tore it to make it smaller (I shoulda used a paper trimmer) and I ended up tearing a long gash in it. I had bought a Sew Easy months ago but hadn't had a chance to play with it yet. However, I was sitting next to Monica at the crop and she had one so I got to try it out. The result is the stitching with the super thick string below. The Smooch Spritz was still damp on the string when I used my Inx on it and since they are water based the Inx blended really nicely. I also fussy cut the roses out of my Antiquities paper and embossed them with clear emboss to make them stand out.

The structured flower below is made with my Rose Creations dies from Spellbinders and Artistic Paper. The rose was Smooch Spritzed with "Cashmere". The smaller flowers were made from my Grand Peony Creations and my Crafty Chronicle and was Smooch Spritzed with "Caramel Latte". The leaves are from an oooooold Spellbinder set and I Smooch Spritzed them with my new "Evergreen" color. The bling swirls are from Want2Scrap and they are called Finesse Swirls. I cut them all apart and make the swirls go the way I need them to go... it is super easy to do.

On the left you can see a couple layers of my Shadow Flowers from Spellbinders. The medium sized die was used with my Crafty Chronicle for the Shadow Flower with the text and the large Shadow Flower was used with shipping labels with the glitter on the sticky side.

In the photo below you can see the Distrezzing a little better. And just in case you are wondering... I'll list who is in the pictures from left to right in the large photo: Me, my younger sister (DeeAnna), my mom (Nancy), and my older sister (Debbie).

In the photo below you can see the title letters that I cut out using my new "Donna's Aphas" from Spellbinders (We were soooo original on the naming of that die... LOL). I die cut the letters out of my Corrugated Board from Zutter, Spritzed them with the new "Gingerale" Smooch Spritz and inked the edges with my new Mix'd Media Inx in "Truffle". You can also see the extra Corrugated board behind the letters and this was entirely inked with the "Truffle" as well. **TIP - When you ink over a large area, make sure that you pat the pad over the surface you want to ink and don't drag the pad across. This can help extend the life of your Inx pads.** You can also see the second set of roses that were fussy cut from my Antiquities paper and embossed with Clear Emboss from Clearsnap.

In the photo below you can see the "Compatible" image that was die cut from my Artistic Paper Journal Cards. I Smooch Spritzed the card with "Cashmere" and while it was still damp I inked the edges with my Mix'd Media Inx in Truffle. You can also see the second medium Shadow Flower cut from my Crafty Chronicle behind the journal card and you can see that both the Chronicle Shadow Flowers were inked with my Mix'd Media Inx in "Truffle".

In the photo below you can see the medium shadow flower (cut from a shipping label and glittered on the sticky side with Pralines & Cream Fairydust) peeking out from the bottom. I also added a dymo label behind the opening on the page tab (that is from my Creative Pages Two die set from Spellbinders) and adhered it to the Artistic Paper. I finished the layout by using my vintage Dymo labeler to add "THE GIRLS" to the center of the Fancy Tag.

Fall Pop-Up Card with Zutter Corrugated Board

When I learned that I would be creating a "Fall" themed project, I was kinda intimidated because in Malaysia we do not have Fall season. I have seen this season on the Internet, in the movies and magazines. I really do love the fall season, hope to experience it someday! So I decided to show you how I created this fall card with a pop-up tree on the inside- using Zutter's Corrugated Board as a key component.

Here is the tutorial of creating a fall pop-up card...

First you need a card base of this size: 30.5cm x 11cm. Fold them into half.

To create the pop-up base, cut a 13cm strip of cardstock, then score it 1cm from the edge followed by 3cm from the edge (ie: the gap between the 2 scores is 2cm) on the both sides of the strip.

Fold all the scored lines and adhere it to the card base just like the picture shown.

Remember to spritz the smooch to create the red background.

To create the tree, I used Zutter's Corrugated Board as a trunk. Distressed it with Clear Snap ink for a natural look. Once you are done, paste it to the pop-up base.

Here I used dies to create my leaves and one of the leaf die is from Donna's collection called Rose Creations. Layer all the leaves until you are happy :)

A New Beginning (using the Distrezz-it-All!)

Hello lovely friends!!  Natasha here to share a layout about one of the most important changes in my life... my marriage to my other half, my soulmate.  We got married in January 2010, on a cold, yet special winter's day.  We did not have a big wedding; we were married at City Hall accompanied by those close to our hearts.  We were dressed in matching Juan Valdez sweatshirts because of the sentimental value they hold.  We used to spend endless hours drinking coffee and talking at Juan Valdez Cafe in Pereira,  Colombia.  It is like our little haven where we shared stories and just enjoyed every moment together.  

For this layout, I mostly used Donna Salazar's Theater papers from her Antiquities Collection.  I love the subtle colors on these papers.  I also used a sketch made by my talented friend, Michelle Grant.  The photo was taken on our wedding day as we celebrated with family. 

The scalloped heart and coordinating pearls are made by Want2Scrap.  They manufacture Nestaboard and Nestabling that coordinate with Spellbinders' Nestabilities dies.  Check out their site  to see some of the gorgeous bling they offer!  

I love the texture that hemp cord adds to a layout.  And of course, I couldn't forget my beloved eyelets!

This gorgeous ornate corner is manufactured by The Dusty Attic.  It's nearly impossible for me to create something without some Dusty Attic chipboard.  These pieces add such beautiful dimension and elegance to any project.

I created my layout on Zutter corrugated board that was painted white and misted with Smooch Spritz in grape, cashmere and mixed berries.  The edges were distressed with a Zutter Distrezz-it-All.

Behind the heart is a die-cut made from Donna's Shadow Flowers die.  These dies make perfect accents for any layout.  The tag behind the photo was cut using her new dies, Creative Book Pages Two.

I titled my layout 'A New Beginning' because my relationship with my husband marked a beautiful change in my life.  Before I met him, I had a difficult life.  I was unhappy with myself and I struggled to take care of two children on my own.  My husband has been the source of great changes in my life, and I am who I am today because of him. 

Below is a quick tutorial on how I added texture to the chipboard element behind my title.

Supplies Needed:

• Chipboard Element
• Smooch Spritz
• Embossing Powder (I used white.)
• Embossing Ink
• Heat Tool
• Texture Stamp
• Ink Pad

STEP 1:  Add a little color and shimmer to the chipboard element by spritzing on some Smooch Spritz.  Dry with a heat tool.

STEP 2:  Apply embossing ink to a texture stamp and stamp the image/texture onto your chippie.

STEP 3:  Cover the chippie with embossing powder.

STEP 4:  Shake off the excess powder and melt with a heat tool.

STEP 5:  Ink the edges and gently swipe across the embossed texture with an ink pad. And you're done!  I really love the effect of Clearsnap's white embossing powder.  I tend to use it often.  I hope you enjoyed my post today.  Wishing you all a beautiful day!  Many hugs.  xoxo
