Binding with Donna Salazar's New Spellbinder Dies!

Winter CHA 2011! The time for fun new products and ooohs and ahhhs, but for me, the best part is seeing friends! I only spent one day at CHA this year - I somehow wriggled my way out of working the Zutter booth. It was actually nice to just walk the floor a bit and not worry about rushing back to the booth to scramble with make ‘n takes and sales. The Zutter team from the main office and warehouse managed things admirably. Cheers to Felipe, Claudia, and Miriam!
My first stop was to see my pal Donna Salazar at the Product Performers booth. She’s got loads of new releases at this show. One of the most Zuttery are her new Creative Book Pages dies from Spellbinders. These large format dies make cool-edged pages and covers you can readily bind with your Bind-it-All. Totally cool, peeps!  Look what you can make with these dies, some Zutter Corrugated Board or chipboard, some yummilicious paper and your Bind-it-All!
Yes, the butterfly is also one of Donna's new Spellbinders dies!

oh look, a cute little sample by ME!  ;)

This cute album shows off all the pages you can make with these dies!

Thanks, Donna, for bringing us more amazing stuff for our Bind-it-All habit!

Art-Full Horizons For Free!

I'm putting on one of my other hats here to tell you about Art-Full Horizons. Last Fall, Donna Salazar (you know, the artist who designed the Distrezz-It-All), Laura Miller  (a superb retreat organizer), and I, by some cosmic force of fate, came together around a table at the back of a Chili's restaurant and hatched an idea over chips and salsa.

Art-Full Horizons was born. We talked about what we would like to see in a weekend scrapbooking/papercrafting event. What did we hear from others? What was already being done? And what wasn't? We left the restaurant that night with notes scribbled on paper and stuffed into our purses and pockets, minds whirling with possibilities, and smiles on our faces.

I am so very excited that Zutter has agreed to go along on this adventure with us as our Platinum Sponsor!  We will be featuring the Bind-It-All and Zutter products in most classes and offering an exclusive Zutter make-n-take project at our Grand Garden Tea, the kickoff to Art-Full Horizons. I mean, the Bind-It-All is so awesome, how could we not use it!!??

We're running a contest right now on the Art-Full Horizons blog where YOU can win a free ticket to Art-Full Horizons! Yeah, you read that right!!

We're giving one lucky person a SINGLE room at AH, all the classes, all the gourmet food, all the wonderful inspiration, and all of the fun for FREE!! Click here for more info on how to enter the giveaway:

Wintertime Fun

We don't get much snow where we live so when we do we make sure we take full advantage of it. This year we got more snow than usual and we were able to make snowmen, a huge snowball, some snow angels and a snow fort. I knew I had to make a mini album for all the great pictures I got.

I made a traditional 6"x6" square mini album and to make it feel wintery I added an acrylic snowflake from Maya Road to the front and back of the album. When I bound the album togehter with my Bind-It-All I used the hole that was all ready on the snowflake and threaded it through the white Owire before closing it. I made the snowflake look icy by rubbing white Staz On ink around the edges.

For the inside I used the Echo Park Wintertime line and put a journaling card on the left side and a photo on the right side.

I love the way it turned out and my sons love looking through it and wishing for more snow :)

Warm Memories from Lea Sanders

Yes, I know this is an Autumn project, but we didn't get around to blogging about it till now.  OZZ DT Lea Sanders' lives in Northern Virginia where the colors are just amazing in the Fall.  She picked some papers to go with the local color to create this very warm, very special album of days she spent with her family.
This was her first use of Hang-it-Alls, and she creatively used them as an album closure instead of as hangers! Clever! And, this hearty album is made with 10" Clipboard Wood Covers.  The wood is oh-so-punchable with your Bind-it-All and durable too!  Try adding your local colors to create your special custom bound album!
Zutter Tools Used:

  • Bind-it-All, Pound-it-All Block, Rivet Setter & Hammer
  • Owire Size & Color: 1 ¼” Antique Brass
  • Covers/Cover-Alls: 10” Clipboard Covers, 9” Chipboard Covers
  • Other: Antique Brass Hang-It-Alls, Antique Brass Rivets
Other Materials:
  • Imaginesce – pattered paper, chipboard stickers
  • K&Company –layered stickers, epoxy stickers, embossed stickers
  • Heidi Grace – epoxy stickers
  • Stampin’ Up! - ink
  • ribbon

Custom Calendars with your Bind-it-All!

The Bind-it-All is perfect for creating hand made calendars and gifts. Even if the holidays have passed, you can still make a custom calendar using the Bind-it-All. Last year I shared a calendar from Little Brown Pen (now under shop name "Stating the Obvious") that I printed out and bound with my Bind-it-All. This year I purchased a printed calendar from BellaDrummer on etsy that I bound with my Bind-it-All to create a wall calendar. Here's how:

Purchase a pre-printed calendar or printable calendar.

Measure the length of the side you wish to bind. If it measures in a half inch increment (5", 5.5", 6", 6.5") then you're in luck! If it does not measure in half inch increments, it will be best to center the item in the Bind-it-All to punch the holes.

Since this calendar measures 5" wide, I will set the Bind-it-All to the "C" Setting. This will ensure that there is a half inch between the edge of the calendar and where the row of holes begins. This is for a professional look and it also keeps the ends of the O-Wires covered by the pages so that they don't snag anything or anyone :)
Since the pages are more than 4" wide the holes won't extend all the way across the pages.  To punch the remaining holes, move the Bind-it-All to the "A" Setting "Open" and slide the pages over to the right (if you are looking at the word Zutter on the front of the machine) until the left edge of the pages is flush with the left edge of the Bind-it-All machine.

On the back of the stop guide that you've been moving to set the machine to "C" and "A" there is a black peg that is the same shape and size of the hole the Bind-it-All punches. Insert that peg into the nearest punched hole. This will ensure even spacing of the new holes you are going to punch.

You can punch all of the pages at one time if you like, just like I did above. Once all the holes in each page are  punched, put the pages in order. Now set the page for December on top. This will ensure that the seam where the O-Wires meet is between the back cover and last page of the book for a professional look and functional book/calendar. If the seam of the O-Wires is in the front of the book, it can interfere with turning the pages and looks unprofessional.

Once you've flipped the back cover (December) to the front, insert the O-Wires from the back of the calendar (from the November side).  This will ensure that none of the pages slip through the seam of the O-Wires. I used 3/8" O -Wires.

Set the Bind-it-All to the 3/8" O-Wire setting.

A fast way to "measure" O-Wires is to insert the whole long strand of O-Wire through the holes then use wire cutters to trim off the excess. You can also count the holes and then count one loop of wire per hole and cut the length of wire that way.

Now close the O-Wires in the Bind-it-All. Flip December back to the back of the calendar. To create the hanger, I used a 1 yard piece of fancy ribbon. You can also use a Zutter "D" and Hang-It-All too.

Thread the ribbon through the O-Wires with tweezers. The tie to the ends into a bow, leaving enough slack to create a hanger.
The ribbon for the hanger should also have enough slack that you can turn the pages of the calendar through it to get to the next month.
Hang and enjoy!
Etsy is a great place to purchase printable calendars (print yourself from a digital file the seller emails you) or printed calendars. Here are a few I like:

Here are the two calendars from Tina K. Photography that I bound to use as stocking stuffers:

The Bind-it-All isn't just for scrapping! Happy Binding :)
